Tire Replacement Cost: Price Per Tire and Set of Four

A set of four tires typically costs $400 to $1,000, with an average tire price near $100 (TD Tires). Add mounting, balancing, fees and tax: Tire Agent puts a $540 tire set at about $690 installed, or $1,004 with TPMS sensors and road hazard coverage.

What tire replacement costs

Tire replacement cost for a full set of four usually lands between $400 and $1,000, according to TD Tires, which also puts the average price of a single tire at about $100 and electric vehicle tires at $150 to $300 each. Prices move with tire size, type and brand. The tire is only part of the bill, because shops charge to mount, balance and dispose of the tires on top of the sticker price.

A real example, line by line

Tire Agent priced a popular all-season tire at $135 each and added every typical fee. The result shows why the final bill is higher than the price tag.

Line itemSet of four
Four tires at $135$540
Mounting and balancing (about $22 each)$88
TPMS sensors (about $40 each, optional)$160
Environmental and disposal fees$16
Road hazard protection, two years (optional)about $135
Sales tax at 7%$65
Total with every extra$1,004

Skipping the optional sensors and road hazard plan brings the same job to roughly $690, which is the figure we use as a typical installed price.

Cost by vehicle size

AAA publishes size-based ranges for winter tire sets, which are a useful guide because winter tires cost more than basic all-season tires. Treat them as the upper side of what you might pay.

VehicleTires onlyInstalled
Compact car (14 to 16 inch)$400 – $800$500 – $1,100
Small SUV or crossover (17 to 19 inch)$600 – $1,200$700 – $1,500
Large SUV or truck (18 to 22 inch)$800 – $1,500+$900 – $1,800+

Extra costs to plan for

  • TPMS sensor replacement: RepairPal lists $245 to $305 for a sensor replacement service, which is more than the $40 per sensor in the example above when a sensor fails and needs a separate visit.
  • Alignment: worth asking about if the old tires wore unevenly. It is often sold as a separate service.
  • Wheels: AAA says a set of four basic steel rims can run $400 or more, which matters if you want a dedicated winter set.
  • Disposal rules: state fees differ, for example $1.50 per tire in Colorado and $2 in North Dakota.

How long tires last

TD Tires says most car tires last 25,000 to 50,000 miles depending on driving habits, road conditions and maintenance. AAA advises replacing winter tires before the tread falls below 6/32 of an inch. Seasonal demand also moves prices, and TD Tires notes that winter and summer tire demand can temporarily raise them.

Why you should replace all four

AAA says to replace all four tires with the same brand and model whenever possible. Installing only two can compromise stopping and steering, and on a four-wheel-drive vehicle it can cause the rear wheels to slide out under braking or cornering. TD Tires also advises against mixing brands, because uniform tires give consistent performance and safety.

Tires for electric vehicles and winter driving

  • Electric vehicle tires: TD Tires lists $150 to $300 each, because they are built for durability and quiet running.
  • Winter tires: AAA gives $400 to $1,200 for a set of four, $500 to $1,500 for studded sets, and $600 to $1,800 or more for premium brands such as Bridgestone Blizzak or Michelin X-Ice. Budget brands run $200 to $600 per set.
  • Seasonal storage: $50 to $150 per season at many shops, according to AAA.
  • Shop wheels: mounting and balancing a set can add $60 to $300 for large SUVs, per AAA.

AAA recommends winter tires where temperatures stay below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for long periods, since all-season rubber stiffens and loses grip in the cold. Tires with the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol deliver 25 to 50 percent better traction than all-season tires in heavy snow.

How to keep the total down

  • Ask for the out-the-door price. Tire Agent says the tire itself is only part of the bill, and mounting, balancing, disposal fees and tax are added.
  • Skip optional extras you do not need. Sensors and road hazard protection added about $315 to Tire Agent's example, and leaving them out brought the job to around $690.
  • Match the original specs. Use the size, speed rating and load index printed on the sidewall of your current tires.
  • Compare online and in-store prices. TD Tires says online is often cheaper, but in-store purchases may include free installation or balancing.
  • Keep tires inflated and rotated. Proper inflation and rotation help you get the full mileage out of a set, and TD Tires says low rolling resistance tires can improve fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent.

Hidden costs to watch for

TD Tires lists alignment, tire disposal fees and optional road hazard protection as common surprises. Disposal rules vary by state, and prices also rise seasonally when demand for winter or summer tires peaks.

Is your quote reasonable?

For an average car, an out-the-door price of about $600 to $800 for four tires is realistic. Ask for the price in writing with every line shown: tires, mounting, balancing, fees and tax. Mounting and balancing near $22 per tire is normal, so a quote that charges far more deserves a question. Road hazard coverage and sensors are optional or situational, so check whether they are included before comparing two shops.
